3 rounds into the 2023 US Outdoors and it hasn’t exactly been a Barn Burner hey. Sure, it’s great to see Aussie brothers dominating, really great, but I’m a fan of the sport first and foremost.
The premier class is in dire need of some spice. The list of top-level riders out is bigger than the list of riders who are lining up. Right now, Jett Lawrence is untouchable at a level we haven’t seen since maybe pre-crash 2015 Eli Tomac.
Even the 250 class has some contenders struggling, Jo Shimoda and RJ Hampshire were expected to challenge for the title, they are both 40+ points down after 3 rounds. Thank goodness for Haiden Deegan!
Kind of sucks, and I’m a little torn, I can’t decide if we’ve been robbed or if we’ve been spoiled, so here’s a bit about both.
The argument for robbed.
A few short months ago we were eagerly anticipating the looming Eli, Chase, Jett battle. A feast for our moto emotions. Sprinkle in a bit of Ferrandis, Kenny, Bam Bam, and El Hombre and it was looking like a perfect storm.
We had a little appetizer at the 2022 MXON, that day showed us that Jett was very much legit on the big bike, just imagine “Beast Mode” Eli and Chase pushing Jett to uncork his full speed, something that we have rarely seen. Or have we ever?
Instead, we have Jett cruising around and just dominating, so we not only don’t get to see Eli and Chase but, in a way, we don’t get to see Jett either, at least not his full talent on show.
It’s a very smart way to race, but it sucks for the fans, id rather see him unleash hell and lap up to 5 th.
Yeah, we’ve been robbed alright.
The argument for spoiled.
Last year was epic. The 2022 Supercross season and Motocross season were absolutely magic, 2022 will be a year spoken about like the great season of 1990 (look it up, kids). Seasons like that are few and far between.
We have had plenty of periods of dominance, big points leads, and predictability, names like McGrath, Carmichael, Villopoto, and Dungey come to mind. And we loved it because we always do.
The most boring day watching Moto is still a day watching the best sport in the world.
Our sport always has a lot of injuries, there are very few sports that carry the risk that moto does, we might not get another 2022 for a while, it spoiled us. It's like we got an upgrade to first class and now we're
back in economy, (not Jetstar!)
What do you think? Robbed or Spoiled, or is it both? Hit me up and let me know.
